Walking in the Elan Valley

If hiking up hills and rambling through the countryside is your idea of a great holiday, then you’ll love our quiet rural location in the village of Nantglas near the Elan Valley. It’s lovely at this time of the year, and there are many walks to enjoy locally with plenty of accessible options to choose from too.

The Elan Valley is a guaranteed scenic day out, and their accessible Visitor Centre is only a short drive from our lodges. You’ll find information on walks and accessibility at the Centre, or check out the Elan Valley website and Welsh Water’s useful Elan Valley Lakes website for lots of information and maps for walkers.

There are six dams to explore on the estate: Craig Goch, Pen y Garreg, Garreg Ddu, and Caban Coch on the Elan River, Claerwen and Dol y Mynach on the Claerwen River. The dams are impressive with some incredible views, and the journey between them is a pleasure too as you travel through some breathtaking countryside.

There is open access over most of the Elan Valley estate and over eighty miles of designated rights of way. There are many walking trails to explore, including the popular Elan Valley Trail which follows the route of the old Elan Valley Railway. Its surfaced paths are used by walkers, horse riders and cyclists and are also suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. A more gentle circular walk leads you through the ancient oak woodlands of Cnwch Wood taking about half an hour to complete and includes a spectacular view of Caban Coch Dam. This route is well-surfaced, so suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs, though some assistance may be needed.

So if you fancy exploring Mid Wales whilst enjoying a stay in beautiful 5-star graded accommodation, give us a call. All our bedrooms are ensuite and our large spacious lodges are nestled in a lovely rural position amongst hills and countryside. You’ll love our welcoming hot tub and cosy woodburner after all that fresh air!
