12 Nov Oak Lodge wet rooms nearing completion
Three bathrooms are now fully tiled in Oak Lodge; there’s just the grouting to do. The final bathroom will be worked on over the next few days, and we plan to finish grouting by the middle of next week. Once the tiling is done, the plumber can return to complete his part of the job, and the electrician can connect the mirrors.
Two bathrooms in Oak Lodge won’t have shower screens, so they will be completely open with a 6 by 3 foot shower tray flush to the floor to enable easy wheelchair access. Also, we are putting in drop-down rails around the toilets in the bathrooms, setting the mirrors at a lowered height, and installing a shower bed.
We have decided that we will install sliding bathroom doors in two of the bathrooms to make it easier to access the bathrooms. These won’t be lockable for safety reasons.
Living with a spinal cord injury myself, I have experienced how difficult it is to find accessible holiday accommodation, and so our aim has always been to be as inclusive as possible, to facilitate fully accessible accommodation. I designed my lodges to meet these requirements from the design stage onwards.
After opening our second lodge, we decided that our third lodge would include more fixed equipment: riser recliner chairs, two profiling beds, hoists, fixed grab rails in bathrooms, a shower wheelchair, a tilting shower wheel chair, various mobile equipment, gantry hoist on request, gantry hoist for access to the hottub, lowered work surface and basin in the kitchen.
We plan to open Oak Lodge next year. Watch this space!
