13 Oct Jarring up honey!
We keep bees on our nursery grounds near the lodges, over 35 busy colonies that produce lots of honey. That’s almost 3 million bees! Bees are fascinating creatures and very important for the wellbeing of our ecosystems.
The first video, taken in mid August, shows just 2 of the 35 colonies we have here at Mid Wales Lodges. Turn the sound up to listen to a happy hum! The next video shows some of the wonderful honey that we extract from the bees on our site.
You can come and inspect the hives and meet the bees in their homes, learn about beekeeping, taste and buy honey. We are always happy to show interested guests around, and answer any questions you may have about beekeeping and honey products.
This year I am jarring up quarter a tonne of honey or about 550 lbs. It’s slow work but I am about half way through. Batches of 40 jars at a time! We have lots of honey to choose from. The colour depends on what the bees have been foraging on in the countryside around our lodges. What colour honey would you choose?
